Meet Paul.

Paul Cassarly is an experienced trumpet player and composer, currently living in Altoona, PA. He is a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, having served in “The Commandant’s Own” U.S. Marine Drum & Bugle Corps from 2013 to 2015.


Paul began his music education at the age of 9, and during his schooling learned from experienced musicians & trumpet players such as Dennis Moses, Joshua Hillard, Larry Detwiler, and Dr. Langston J. Fitzgerald III.

During his elementary schooling, Paul participated in the Altoona Elementary Jazz Band (AEJB) formed and directed by Dennis Moses. In 2004, he received one of the only Elementary Soloist Awards given in almost 10 years at Hershey’s Music in the Parks.

Middle School

After he began his music education at Keith Junior High School (KJHS) in Altoona, PA under the direction of Jon Yon, Paul started studying trumpet under Joshua Hillard, a 1997 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). Paul also participated in local county music festivals.

High School

After leaving KJHS, Paul started the tenth grade at the Altoona Area High School (AAHS) under music director Larry Detwiler and his wife Kelly Detwiler, who directed the AAHS orchestra. Paul participated in every Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) festival available, auditioning for all District, Regional, and State festivals throughout Pennsylvania. Paul was a consecutive 3-year participant of the PMEA State Orchestra festivals from 2008 to 2011.

In 2009, Paul auditioned for and was selected to be a player for the All-Star Trumpet Ensemble (ASTE) at the International Trumpet Guild (ITG) Conference in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The concert with the ASTE opened for a jazz concert featuring Nicholas Payton.

(Paul was also selected to attend the Pennsylvania Governor’s School music program in 2009, but the program was defunded by the state before he was able to attend.)

Penn State University

After graduating AAHS in June 2011, Paul spent the summer preparing for his post-secondary education at the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) School of Music. He began his studies as a Music Education major and trumpet player, taking lessons privately under Dr. Langston J. Fitzgerald III.

During his two years at PSU, Paul studied Music Education during his freshman year and Music Composition under Dr. Paul Barsom as a sophomore. During his third semester, Paul auditioned for the U.S. Marine Corps and was selected to become a member of “The Commandant’s Own” U.S. Marine Drum & Bugle Corps in Washington, D.C.

Paul began his basic training as a U.S. Marine in July 2013 at Parris Island, Marine Combat Training (MCT) at Camp Geiger in October 2013, and in November 2013 began his duties as a 5512 MOS Marine Bugler at the 8th & I Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C.

After serving from November 2013 through April 2015, Paul was discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps due to legal & medical issues, and returned to his hometown.


Paul has spent the last several years honing his craft as a trumpet player, participating in as many music groups as he could between day jobs and running a small marketing business, Cassus Media LLC.

Paul began studying Music Production at Berklee College of Music Online in 2016, and finished his Bachelors Degree in 2019.

Present Day

Currently, Paul is actively building his career as a professional civilian trumpet player and musician. He is apprenticing as a trumpet maker under David Maller of Maller Baroque Brass Instruments in Altoona, PA.
